Characterizing the material properties of the bilayer magnetic films. The contraction of PDMS, silicone oil films will be measured with different silicone oil concentrations. The curvature of bilayer films will be measured with different thickness ratios. The curvature will be measured with different silicone oil concentrations and overall thickness. The goal is to investigate the curvature range that can be achieved with the bilayer magnetic films for use in 3D design.
The results from Aim 1 will help in designing two types of 3D geometry. The two modes of actuation purused in this project are crawling and enclosing. For the crawling geometry, an asymmetrical rectangular film will be created with different curvature at each end. For the enclosing geometry, a star shaped film will be created with curved appendages.
